West Main is officially participating in Campari’s international Negroni Week this year! This is a week when the world celebrates all things bitter and gentian-based, especially the 20th century king of such drinks: the eponymous Negroni. This is also a drive to raise money for charities on a global scale, so there are plenty of good reasons to drink.
We’re featuring a flight of drinks for this week-long celebration: the modern classic White Negroni, our house Barrel-Aged Negroni, and the Boulevardier. We’re no stranger to the White Negroni, having featured it on our Modern Classics Flight from Volume #3. This cocktail was created in 2001 out of necessity—a floral interpretation of the classic, originally with Plymouth Gin.
Our house Barrel-Aged Negroni has been a long-standing staple at West Main, though it has disappeared from the current menu while we put some back for some future projects. It makes a return this month, however, with six weeks in the barrel tempering the bitter edges of Campari’s iconic bitterness, making this cocktail a perfect introduction.
And of course, being from Kentucky, we’re featuring the Boulevardier, a bourbon-based Negroni hybrid gem from MacElhone’s 1927 Barflies and Cocktails. Our Boulevardier splits the base, using Old Granddad Bonded and Four Roses Single Barrel, adding Campari and Cocchi di Torino. None of these drinks should be missed, but this enchanting, bitter cocktail especially.
Other cocktails are, of course, available upon request—we have so many bitter favorites it was a battle to narrow our list to these. While you’re here, chat up the staff about their personal favorites.
