Jigger, Beaker, Flask: Sahara Burning Heart

“Watch this one when out under the moon in a desert overnight camp, riding camels out across the vast dunes, or strolling in the moonlight around the Sphinx (…) Full many a man has gone and committed himself for life under that desert moon after a brace of Glowing Hearts.” So says Charles Baker, Jr., when he discusses the Sahara Glowing Heart in his 1939 book The Gentleman’s Companion Volume II, or Around the World With Jigger, Beaker, and Glass. Originally equal parts gin, absinthe, and apricot brandy, with lime and grenadine, our house variation on this cocktail alters the portions per Mr. Baker’s recommendation. Nevertheless, this powerful cocktail does cast an atmospheric magic with its soft but gorgeous color, its strong botanicals, and its refusal to be pinned down on your palette.

Though not recommended for drinkers staunchly against licorice flavors, the Sahara Burning Heart is a botanical lozenge of bright flavors, and joins the East India Cocktail and the Cuba Libré on Vol #2’s second cocktail flight, named for its original source: Jigger, Beaker, Flask.
